JERSEY 2023 CONFERENCE WELCOME

Thursday 30th March to Sunday 2nd April 2023

The 2023 National Conference Committee look forward to personally welcoming you to Jersey in 2023, the only “Offshore” 41 Cub & Tangent Conference, over the water but easy to get to from whole of UK. At the time of writing Easyjet operates flights from nine UK airports to Jersey, the sunniest of the British Isles – well, for most of the time! Whether you attend Conference for the stupendous parties we have planned, for 41 Club AGM, for Tangent AGM, or just to meet up with old friends you will find we have a great programme planned by an organising Committee with over fifty years’ experience. If you have never attended Conference before Jersey 2023 is the one you must try. Our lovely Island offers much more – superb scenery, gorgeous beaches, gourmet dining, wild north coast walks, verdant countryside walks, and plenty of other activities.

Our experienced Jersey 2023 Committee, led again by myself who was 2012 Conference Chairman looks forward to welcoming you back to our “Treasure Island” which is our 2023 Conference theme. “Where’s the Gold?” we hear your rejoinder, indeed we are working to make your Conference experience even more Golden in our beautiful sunshine Island. To find out more about Jersey and the experiences on offer please visit www.jersey.com.

We hope to meet many new faces as well as seeing all the regular 41 Club & Tangent Conference goer’s whose company we have enjoyed in previous decades. 41 Club & Tangent Conference comes to Jersey every ten (due to pandemic this time, eleven!) years, so don’t miss this opportunity to discover or re-acquaintance yourself with our Treasure Island. The 2023 National Conference Committee’s objective is to make your Conference fun, enjoyable and memorable. We look forward to seeing you and your partner at Jersey 2023.

The Jersey Tour

Friday 31st March 2023

An all-day coach tour of Jersey best sights, monuments and vistas. With excellent live and informative commentary from your experienced driver you can sit back and enjoy the view from the comfort of your seat and appreciate all of Jersey’s stunning and diverse coastline. Lunch stop at popular Café on north coast included in ticket price.

Departing St Helier the full day tour visits St Aubin’s Bay, St Brelade Bay, Corbière Lighthouse, St Ouen’s Bay, Grève De Lecq, the northern coastline, Gorey Harbour and returning via the varied and rugged east coast.

Driving along the coast road you will have the perfect view of the Island’s picturesque beaches and bays. Beaches in Jersey range from isolated coves to wide golden sandy beaches on the south and west coasts. Some of our roads are quite narrow but are no problem for our accomplished drivers.

Make sure you have your camera to hand as we will be stopping for photo opportunities along the way and also for refreshments where you can sample what the Island has to offer (including St Brelade’s Bay). St Brelade’s Bay is a popular beach, loved by visitors for its golden sands and safe swimming, beach cafes and restaurants. At the end of the Five Mile Road in Jersey’s coastal parish of St Ouen you will visit the famous Jersey Pearl Centre showcasing a large collection of pearl jewellery.

The Stadium

Friday 31st March 2023

Mont Orgueil Castle, or Gorey Castle as it was first known, has cast its imposing shadow over the beautiful fishing port of Gorey for more than 800 years. One of the finest examples of a medieval fortress in existence, Mont Orgueil is also a symbol of Jersey’s national identity and independent character.

The Castle is home to several art displays including “The Queen” by light artist Chris Levine and holographer Rob Munday, which features, “Equanimity”, a world-renowned holographic portrait of Her Majesty commissioned as part of Jersey’s celebrations of its 800-year-old relationship with the monarchy

WHAT MAKES THE CASTLE SO SIGNIFICANT?

In 1290 the Channel Islands took on the status of Crown Dependencies, giving them constitutional rights of self-governance and judicial autonomy. The circumstances that led to this date back to 1066 when, as a result of the Norman Conquest of England, the Kings of England were also Dukes of Normandy. However, in 1204, Philip II of France seized the Duchy of Normandy from King John. The Duchy remained disputed territory until 1259 when the English sovereign surrendered his claim to the Duchy except for the Channel Islands.

All of a sudden Jersey was on the doorstep of a belligerent enemy, against which substantial defensive fortifications would be required. The east-facing headland protected by cliffs and the sea, which has been the site of a bulwark since the Iron Age, was a natural choice for King John’s Castle. Huge cargoes of building materials arrived from England and a circuit of walls and round towers evolved. The Castle served as a base for the largely English garrison.

The Castle was subject to raids by the French in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, by which time the age of bow and arrow was giving way to that of gunpowder and cannon. Terrific works were required to adjust the structure to these modern requirements, but as they were taking place in the 16th century, work commenced on the artillery fortress of Elizabeth Castle in St Aubin’s Bay. Suddenly Mont Orgueil Castle was no longer the Islands principal defence against invaders – it became known as the ‘Old Castle’ and was relegated to other functions.

Take in breath-taking views of the French coast as you delve into the network of staircases, towers and secret rooms to discover hidden treasures.  Explore the network of staircases, towers and secret rooms to discover gruesome tales and hidden treasures.  Learn the story of the Castle through specially commissioned artwork, climb the turrets to find the medieval ‘wheel of urine’, and make your way if you dare into the cellar to study the ‘witchcraft’ exhibit. High on the battlements, with their commanding view of the surrounding hillsides and distant French coast, stand shoulder to shoulder with wooden soldiers who ‘guard’ the Castle.

Durrell Zoo

Friday 31st March 2023

Jersey Zoo began as the first ever conservation-themed zoo, set in beautiful parkland with large enclosures within which endangered species from across the world feely roam. Over 60 years later, Gerald Durrell’s animal haven is the natural place to discover some of the world’s most incredible creatures. Whether you’re after fun, tranquillity, knowledge or a place to soak up the sunshine, this stunning 32-acre park with valleys, woodland and some of the world’s rarest animals is the perfect chance to experience ‘the jewel in Jersey’s crown’ where you can see 65 species at close quarters.

Durrel Wildlife Conservation Trust field staff operate 50 projects in 18 countries around the world, conserving endangered species. With a focus on islands, where unique species are under immense pressure, and on animal groups suffering the worst declines, such as primates and amphibians.

Today, the overarching role of the animal collection in Jersey Zoo and overseas – the ‘ark’, as Gerald Durrell would have it – is conservation. At Jersey Zoo staff manage breeding programmes for releasing endangered species back to the wild, develop the skills and tools to conserve species in the wild, train others in animal husbandry and conservation practice, and communicate important messages to visitors. Up to 90% of the species at Jersey Zoo contributing to conservation, training and research, or education. Relax and stay a while or see the best bits in under two hours.
